Laser hair reduction (often referred to as laser hair removal) is a cosmetic procedure that uses concentrated beams of light to damage hair follicles and inhibit future growth.
While often called “removal,” it is more accurately described as reduction. Most people experience a 70–90% reduction in hair, and any regrowth is typically much finer, lighter, and slower than before.
How It Works
The laser targets melanin (pigment) in the hair. The light energy converts to heat, which travels down the hair shaft to destroy the follicle. Because lasers target pigment, the treatment is traditionally most effective on dark hair and light skin. However, newer technologies like Nd:YAG lasers are now safe and effective for deeper skin tones.
What to Expect: The Basics
| Feature | Details |
| Number of Sessions | Typically 6 to 10 sessions for optimal results. |
| Intervals | Usually spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart (depending on the body area). |
| Pain Level | Often described as a “rubber band snapping” against the skin. Most modern machines have cooling tips to minimize discomfort. |
| Common Areas | Face, underarms, bikini line, legs, back, and chest. |
Benefits & Risks
The Upside:
-
Precision: Targets dark, coarse hairs while leaving surrounding skin undamaged.
-
Speed: Small areas (like the upper lip) take seconds; larger areas (like legs) can take up to an hour.
-
No More Ingrowns: It is one of the best treatments for preventing and “curing” painful ingrown hairs.
-
Cost-Effective: While the upfront cost is higher, it saves money over a lifetime of waxing and shaving.
Potential Side Effects:
-
Temporary: Redness, swelling, and a “sunburned” feeling for 24–48 hours.
-
Rare: Blistering, scarring, or pigment changes (skin lightening or darkening), usually only if performed by an unskilled technician or on tanned skin.
Preparation & Aftercare
To get the best results and stay safe, follow these “Golden Rules”:
Before your session:
-
Shave the area 12–24 hours before (the laser needs to hit the root, not the long hair on top).
-
Avoid waxing or plucking for 4–6 weeks prior.
-
Stay out of the sun.16 Tanned skin increases the risk of burns.
After your session:
-
Wear SPF 30+ on any treated areas exposed to the sun.
-
Avoid heat: No hot showers, saunas, or heavy exercise for 24–48 hours.
-
Don’t pluck: If hair regrows between sessions, only shave it.
Important Note: Laser hair reduction does not work on white, grey, or very light blonde hair because there is no pigment for the laser to “see.”
